International Women’s Day 2026 – Supporting Women Everywhere by Dr Linda S. Spedding (c)

Women continue to inspire women in the ongoing quest for parity and fairness in the world as we enter the second quarter of the Twenty First Century. At Women in Law International (WiL) we have worked tirelessly since 2004 to offer a safe and positive haven and healthy resource for women globally, both directly in the profession and indirectly to all women who the law touches.

While external matters continue to cause human suffering and hardship we can develop our individual resilience and hope for improvement in all ways. WiL’s main objective is to offer positive tools and suggestions for balance at a time when many feel so overwhelmed by the many competing demands of life, both personal and professional. This enables fulfilment in life and career – true life management. Sample WiL approaches and tools to focus on to achieve a happy, healthy and fulfilling career and life are:

Restoration and Resilience in the Time of Crisis – Keeping Healthy Balance through enhanced energy by awareness of Nature’s Five Great Elements – Earth, wind, fire, water, ether- and feeling better in nature – leaving anxiety behind:

o finding one’s purpose – knowing oneself and one’s role and meaning

o being humble, open, aware that there is greater knowledge or wisdom – mental openness

o being able to listen and learn

o being able to quieten oneself and go deeper – meditation

o mindfulness – contemplation

o being at peace and relearning about one’s inner peace

o balance and responsibility – when to be selfish or selfless

o honouring nature, trees, harmony – walking meditation.

  • Simple ways to be inspired and maintain resilience :

o Trees hugging or Nature Walks and activities bring imagination and inspiration, resilience

o Look forward –  positive mindset

o Keep walking  symbolically- handling challenges and managing priorities

o Remembering Uplifting quotations and thoughts for the day as well as gratitude for every moment of life

o Have hope and joy – humour and laughter

  • To promote the day as:

o Magical, Mystical, Collaborative

  • To discuss and consider

o Rewinding and recharging framework – health and life management

  • activities for collaboration- invite

o  lawyers and legal sector representatives

WiL is, moreover, an inclusive initiative as we believe that we all need to work together for the fulfilment of individual rights and justice. This is very important.

Therefore the timely occasion of International Women’s Day is an inspiring reminder that we can all make positive change – starting with our individual action. It is timely given that the Spring is the Season of new beginnings and freshness- each March we can reflect upon how far we have come, what has been achieved so far and what is yet to be achieved. This review is not just theoretical – it is extremely practical.

Women celebrate International Women’s Day in support of women around the globe as WiL has highlighted. As is mentioned on the IWD website:

“IWD is a truly inclusive, diverse, and eclectic moment of impact worldwide.”

The selected date, as is mentioned further below, is 8 March globally,  commemorating women’s fight for equality and liberation along with the women’s rights movement. It is well over a century of history and change in this context: as has been noted previously the first International Women’s Day was held in March 1911.It is of course helpful to recall the history and that International Women’s Day continues to give a key spotlight on outstanding issues such as gender equality, reproductive rights, and violence and abuse against women. Woven into the priorities and impact of IWD is the vital importance of peace for the attainment of a fair society and global community.

The celebration of International Women’s Day this year highlights the announced theme as follows, “Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls”. This theme is clearly significant in emphasising the strength of women’s collective determination. The focus is generally seen to be on women’s growth in STEM, business and leadership, along with efforts to address gender-based violence and promote financial inclusion.  In 2026 IWD falls on a Sunday, enabling more time of contemplation on the call for rights, justice, and action. Since IWD also honours the role of carer of home and family – the responsibilities at home. Indeed the manner in which IWD is celebrated depends largely on local customs and traditions. The occasion essentially highlights the ongoing fight for parity, reminding us of the 1917 women’s protest for “bread and peace”.  As we know peace and bread are the basic demands of the exploited. War made these demands extremely urgent and this slogan became a call to action then.

IWD is also a flexible event with various forms and platforms or priorities. It is noted and supported in different ways in different jurisdictions. By way of example in the U.K. the Women of the World festival is held over three days around March 8 in London. The event generally features speakers, activists and performers who discuss the issues faced by women worldwide. This  festival has also expanded to other countries, thereby bringing together voices and perspectives from different backgrounds.

By way of further example in India International Women’s Day is highlighted by celebrating women’s achievements and debating equal rights. It is reported that the government holds national conferences such as “Nari Shakti Se Viksit Bharat,”  to honour IWD. Meanwhile companies organise award events and online campaigns that demonstrate inspiring stories. Government programmes like Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao and Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana are often discussed, emphasising the significance of education and financial independence. Events are extensive and active. They include seminars, rallies, panel talks, self-defence sessions and cultural programmes, while workplaces and social media platforms recognise women achievers and share stories of courage. China, meanwhile, has evidently recognised International Women’s Day since 1949. While March 7 is known as Girl’s Day, March 8 is for women. Employers are encouraged, though not required, to give female staff a half-day holiday. The day is said also to have a commercial aspect, with men often buying gifts for the honoured women in their lives.

It is interesting to note that March is also the US Women’s History Month which is a celebration of women’s contributions to history, culture and society.Women’s History Month honours the successes and sacrifices of American women. This commenced on March 8,1857, when,  reportedly, hundreds of women from New York City garment and textile factories rallied to protest the harsh working conditions.  For this year – 2026 – the National Women’s History Alliance (NWHA) has proposed the theme: Leading the Change: Women Shaping a Sustainable Future This theme is dedicated to honour the women who have and are reimagining and rebuilding systems to ensure long-term sustainability – environmental, economic, educational, and societal. As is stated on their website:

‘In this pivotal moment of history, we are called to confront a range of overlapping global challenges: climate change, economic insecurity, healthcare disparities, and threats to democratic participation. These issues are deeply intertwined – and women, particularly from marginalised communities, often experience their impacts most acutely.

Yet women have also led the charge toward lasting solutions.

“Leading the Change: Women Shaping a Sustainable Future” expands our understanding of sustainability beyond just environmental concerns. It encompasses financial sustainability, community resilience, leadership succession, and intergenerational equity. Whether developing green technologies, advancing economic justice, strengthening education systems, or building civic power – women are designing blueprints for sustainable transformation. This theme affirms that shaping a sustainable future means fostering systems that support both people and the planet.”

As has been explained in WiL’s  previous articles the United Nations in fact observed IWD for the first time in 1975.In 1977, March 8 was adopted to promote women’s rights and international peace. Since then, the day has become a global event supported by many governments, organisations and individuals. The importance of International Women’s Day, as noted previously, lies in raising awareness about – with a view to resolving –  ongoing issues. These include practical and crucial matters such as equal pay, access to education, safety, reproductive rights and ending violence against women. It gives people a chance to come together, speak up and support change. The day also celebrates the women who have made a difference in their families, workplaces and communities.

IWD is not a national holiday in all jurisdictions – such as the U.S. – but the occasion is observed by many communities, companies and educational institutions across nations as a call to action for change.

The theme for 2026 “encourages a mindset of generosity and collaboration” as is noted further below. Collaboration is made possible through related initiatives. For instance the status of national awareness is highlighted in the Global Gender Gap Report. On its website the Global Gender Gap Index explains that it “annually benchmarks the current state and evolution of gender parity across four key dimensions (subindexes): Economic Participation and Opportunity, Educational Attainment, Health and Survival, and Political Empowerment.” Since this was launched in 2006, twenty years have elapsed and evidently this index it is the longest-standing index tracking the progress of numerous countries’ efforts towards closing these gaps over time. The most recent report from the World Economic Forum (WEF), which names key benchmarks in gender equality across 148 countries, found the gap is only 68.8% closed, an increase of 0.3 percentage points compared to the previous year. The report has found that North America leads the 2025 regional gender gap rankings, having closed 75.8% of its overall gender gap. Nevertheless the U.S. ranked in 42nd place, being in first place for educational attainment but 58th for health and survival. There is indeed much to do to achieve holistic improvement in most jurisdictions.

The collaborative and generous approach is paramount in 2026 – indeed the encouragement to give to gain is implicit in this year’s IWD. As mentioned on the website:

“Give To Gain is a worldwide call to contribute

Giving requires open hearts and minds.

Giving our support to help advance gender equality reinforces a sense of connection and purpose. This creates an important ripple effect for spreading impact.

We can all give our support to gain advancement for women and girls.

As individuals, giving support means calling out stereotypes, challenging discrimination, questioning bias, celebrating women’s success, and more.

Sharing our knowledge and encouragement with others is also key.”It is so important to support and empower women in today’s world in which so many challenges abound. IWD is a day that can inspire and expedite awareness in very positive ways. At WiL we continue to support this extremely significant annual event.
